Research and production efforts at our Fashion Exchange have received a major boost thanks to $2.5 million in funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s College Industry Innovation Fund (CIIF) awards and the provincial government.

Kirsty Duncan, the Minister of Science and Sport, announced $960,000 in funding for the Fashion Exchange on July 25, 2018. These funds were matched earlier this year by the provincial government and bolstered by in-kind support.

The Fashion Exchange opened in 2016 and provides hands-on advanced production experience for George Brown fashion students and offers manufacturing services and support to local companies and emerging designers to enable the growth of small brands. The new funding will support the expansion of the Fashion Exchange’s LIFT (Leading through Innovation in Fashion Technologies) research program.

“Returning fashion manufacturing to Canada requires access to skilled employees, local business support and a fresh model for production to capitalize on new technologies,” Marilyn McNeil-Morin, Director at the Fashion Exchange, said.

“The support provided by the Canada Foundation for Innovation allows us to reach more Ontario companies, moving new, innovative products to market faster and ultimately cultivating local, sustainable economic development.”
