If you have done or know someone with a hidden talent such as embroidery, needlework, or another type of textile artisan work, we would like to meet you.
We want to highlight artisan’s culture and unique art; we want to learn your craft and how you grew with it.
Let’s celebrate and share their incredible work and unique pieces of art.
George Brown College Fashion Exchange is truly grateful to have the opportunity to collaborate with Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Elizabeth Dowdeswell to create this video.
Many newcomers to Canada possess a wealth of textile hand-skills taught to them as part of their cultural identity, to embellish clothing, decorate ceremonial items or to enhance items in the home. Many of these specialized hand-skills are overlooked and not used, therefore do not get exposed, handed down and preserved.
The George Brown College Fashion Exchange’s Hidden Talents project proposes developing an exhibition, event and online portal to showcase artisans’ work and connect designers directly to artisans for future employment. Quarterly workshops where artisans share their skills will build community, showcase skills to other cultures, and foster greater appreciation for textile hand-skills.
